The Uttar Pradesh government is facing severe criticism after a video showing some workers erect temporary tin structures to block view of a crematorium in Lucknow got viral on social media.
The matter pertains to the Baikunth Dham crematorium in Lucknow where bodies of several Covid-19 patients who succumbed to the disease were burnt in large numbers as coronavirus-related deaths mounted in the city.
Recently, a video had gone viral on social media showing many pyres of Covid-19 victims at the crematorium. Seeing this, people hit out at the state government and questioned its handling of the pandemic.
Following the uproar, civic authorities in Lucknow started erecting temporary tin walls so that people passing by the crematorium could not see the burning pyres and record videos.
Health infrastructure in Lucknow is severely strained due to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases. Hospitals have reported shortage of beds for patients while crematoriums too are flooded with bodies of those who succumbed to the viral disease.
Reports suggest that even big crematoriums like the one at Baikunth Dham are facing a shortage of firewood to perform last rites.
Politics heats up
Soon after workers were seen erecting temporary tin walls around the crematorium, the Opposition lashed out the state government.
Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh tweeted a video of the temporary structure. He wrote that if the government had worked this hard to build hospitals, there would be no need to cover the crematorium.
The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress party too slammed the UP government, saying the world will know the truth irrespective of how hard the government tries to hide it.
For the past few days, Lucknow has been reporting over 5,000 Covid-19 cases every day. In the last 24 hours, the city recorded 5,433 new cases and 13 deaths.
With this, Lucknow's overall case tally has risen to 1,22,118 and the toll stands at 1,384. The city currently has 31,687 active cases.
